Current projects

New projects are constantly being proposed and implemented at Chimfunshi. These are designed to improve the care of the chimpanzees and the lives of the villagers of Chimfunshi:
Construction of new outdoor enclosures
The ‘project planning’ to construct four new spacious outdoor enclosures, is currently in process on site at Chimfunshi. This will be the most ambitious and complex project to date, including the challenge to construct high electric fences, various respective buildings as well as cages to feed, give medicine, observe and introduce new chimpanzees into the enclosure.
Construction of a new handling facility
Chimfunshi’s enclosure no. 2 is in desperate need of a new handling facility. Our biggest forested enclosure is home to the largest chimpanzee group at Chimfunshi, numbering 59 members. Unfortunately, the current handling facility no longer meets the needs of the group. It is necessary to expand and modernise it to ensure consistent feeding and veterinary care for all chimpanzees.
Constuction of a quarantine station
Our quarantine station is no longer sufficient for the new arrivals, who must first be quarantined, so as not to endanger our chimpanzees with external diseases. Before the new chimpanzees are integrated into one of the chimpanzee groups, not only do they need to be thoroughly screened and vaccinated, they also unfortunately have to stay separate for a few weeks from the other chimpanzees.
