[:de]In Sambia hat der Kandidat der linksorientierten Regierungspartei, Verteidigungsminister Edgar Lungu, die Präsidentenwahl offenbar knapp für sich entschieden. Nach Auszählung von 146 der 150 Wahlbezirke entfielen laut Wahlkommission 47,96 Prozent der Stimmen auf den Kandidaten der regierenden Patriotischen Front (PF) Oppositionsführer Hakainde Hichilema kam auf 47,17 Prozent. Damit erhielt Lungu nur rund 13.000 Stimmen mehr als sein Herausforderer. Hichilema sprach von Wahlbetrug, räumte aber noch vor Bekanntgabe des Endergebnisses seine Niederlage ein.

Der neue Präsident steht vor einer schweren Aufgabe: Obwohl das Land zu den größten Kupferproduzenten der Welt gehört und vergleichsweise ein hohes Wirtschaftswachstum verzeichnet, lebt die Mehrheit der rund 14 Millionen Einwohner in bitterer Armut. Nach Schätzungen der Weltbank müssen 70 Prozent der Sambier mit nur rund einem Euro am Tag auskommen.

The ruling Patriotic Front (PF)’s candidate won a total of 809, 925 votes or 48.33 percent against 780,168 votes or 46.46 percent for his rival Hakainde Hichilema of the opposition United Party for National Development.

The new president faces a difficult task. Although the country is one of the largest copper producer in the world and recorded relatively high economic growth, the majority of the 14 million inhabitants lives in abject poverty. According to the World Bank, 70 percent of Zambians have to live with just one euro a day.[:]
