Happy Birthday Mary!
4. September 2017
Today is Mary’s birthday. The female chimpanzee was born in Chimfunshi on the 4th of September in 2005 – which makes her 12 years old today. She lives in the biggest of our four enclosures, enclosure number 2, along with 48 other chimps.
Mary’s mother Masya came to the Wildlife Orphanage in 1994, aged 3.
When Masya was still a baby, her mother was brutally slain by poachers. She was then sold in Zaire and ended up on a ship bound for overseas. In Haiti however, she was removed from the ship, as she was deemed too ill to travel on further. She was adopted by a family that cared for her until she was well and kept her as a pet. This family however wanted what was best for Masya and arranged for her to come to Chimfunshi. It took nine months until Masya finally arrived in the Wildlife Orphanage. She was put into an enclosure along with Zsabu, Violet, Doc, Diana and Trixi, but Masya refused to accept the existence of the other five babies, since she had never seen another chimpanzee and was entirely overwhelmed by the situation. But her trust rose daily and she turned from an introvert to a confident and accepted group member. It did not take long until she climbed trees and played with the others.
