IUCN und WWF weisen anläßlich des Jahres des Affen jedoch auch darauf hin, dass unsere nächsten Verwandten stark gefährdet sind. „Inzwischen werden mehr als 60 Prozent aller Affenarten auf der internationalen „Roten Liste“ der Weltnaturschutzorganisation IUCN als „bedroht“ eingestuft. Im letzten Jahr des Affen vor zwölf Jahren traf dies lediglich auf jede vierte Art zu. Hauptgründe für die zunehmende Bedrohung sind laut WWF der Lebensraumverlust durch den Menschen und die Wilderei.“
