Climat-smart farming

Chimfunshi promotes sustainable and climate-smart agriculture to combine food security, economic stability and environmental sustainability. The climate-smart agriculture and agroforestry project plays a key role in improving the living conditions of the local population and helps to create sustainable economic prospects. The targeted use of resource-conserving farming methods ensures long-term soil fertility and water availability, while increasing resilience to the effects of climate change.

One focus is on climate-smart agriculture, which promotes environmentally friendly cultivation and management practices. Fruit, vegetables and staple foods are produced according to sustainable principles, providing local people with access to healthy food and reducing dependence on external supply chains.

At the same time, organic livestock production provides an alternative source of income for the community. The cattle graze on semi-natural pastures, which preserves the Miombo forest in its natural form and prevents over-exploitation of the land.

As well as contributing to ecological stability, the project is creating important jobs and training opportunities, particularly for women, who are disproportionately affected by informal employment in Zambia. This strengthens their economic independence and promotes a fairer society in the long term.

In addition, Chimfunshi's approach supports Zambia's national development goals, particularly in the areas of poverty reduction, agricultural progress and climate resilience, as well as the UN's global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 1, 2, 5, 8 and 13).

Sustainability

The sustainable use of natural resources creates a balance between economic development and conservation that can serve as a model for other rural regions in Zambia.

Chimfunshi thus combines social progress, economic development and environmental protection in integrated landscape management. The project not only helps to reduce the causes of displacement, such as poverty and climate-related food insecurity, but also ensures the long-term well-being of the local population, the conservation of biodiversity and the functioning of ecosystems.
