Pal was the first chimp to arrive at Chimfunshi. In October 1983 rangers rescued him from poachers and brought him to the Siddles’ cattle farm. He had been smuggled to Zambia and arrived at Chimfunshi with horrible wounds on his face. The bullet that probably killed his mother seemed to have grazed his jaw and ripped off parts of his lower face. His back teeth and jaw were damaged. He suffered from diarrhea for weeks and needed months to recover.
