Violet

Zsabu and Violet were smuggled out of Zaire into South Africa. The chimpanzees were confiscated by customs at the airport. The smuggler, a woman from Zaire, was charged with illegal trade with endangered species, but only had to pay a penalty of 200 USD. When the two young great apes arrived at the airport, they were in a very bad condition. During the court hearing they were in the custody of the zoo of Johannesburg. Local and international animal protection groups plead for the great apes’ transfer to Chimfunshi. Local South African companies sponsored the journey to Chimfunshi, so that Zsabu and Violet could start their new life at the orphanage.
