The “Grande Dame” of Chimfunshi is Milla who lives in the orphanage since 1990. Jane Goodall brought her from Tanzania, where she had discovered her in a bar, in which she had been the main attraction as a booze-drinking and cigarette-smoking chimpanzee. She was kept for the guests’ entertainment and quickly developed a habit. Because of that, Jane Goodall couldn’t find a place for her in the chimpanzee orphanage in Gombe National Park in Tanzania. Chimfunshi was the only place that could take her in. She was seventeen when she arrived at Chimfunshi and had to battle severe withdrawal symptoms.
